PROGRAMS & SERVICES

In the school year 2009-2010, over 449 students in the state of Nebraska were educated through the Nebraska Kidney Association’s

Kidney Health

Education Program

The Kidney Health & Education Program (K-HEP) is designed to give elementary school students a better understanding of kidney disease and its treatments and to increase awareness of the importance of organ donation and transplantation.

     PROGRAM SYNOPSIS

This program is designed for an interactive 30 to 60 minute class period. A volunteer medical professional and a kidney recipient or dialysis patient will present the program to the class.

In the classroom, presenters will ask students to volunteer to be part of the presentation. The student representing the kidney patient needs a kidney from one of several potential donors. The potential kidney donors wear vests with removable kidneys attached. Flash cards indicating the donor’s age, blood type, and willingness vs. ability to donate kidneys are also provided.

Using a prepared script that leads the students through kidney function to kidney failure and its treatments, Nebraska Kidney Association representatives will help the class select the best donor.

Throughout the presentation, students learn why organ donation is important and the crucial need to maintain good health throughout their lives.
